Maths fact fluency is the quick and effortless (automatic) recall of basic maths facts in all four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. When pupils develop fluency, they free up their working memory to focus on more complex tasks. Without fluency pupils often struggle with problem-solving, reasoning, and applying strategies under time pressure.

Karen has taught for more than twenty-five years in primary schools in Yorkshire, evolving her practice using an evidence-informed approach. She has taught in Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2 and is currently a Year 5 Teacher and Lead Practitioner at St Alban’s Academy in Wickersley. About Reflex
Grades 2+
Built on a fact family approach, Reflex uses a variety of explicit strategies to introduce new facts, including the commutative property, rule-based patterns, and visual models.
As a student progresses in a Reflex game, the system continuously adjusts the difficulty of fact retrieval based on their progress, providing an adequate level of challenge within the limits of current abilities.
