New research found that students who used ExploreLearning Reflex with high fidelity, achieving the “Green Light” in the majority of usage sessions, were significantly more likely to reach 100% fluency levels compared to students who did not use Reflex with high fidelity. Regardless of fall baseline measurements and across all achievement levels, students who used Reflex with high fidelity outscored their peers. These students also showed significantly higher growth on NWEA MAP Growth assessments and a greater likelihood of meeting or exceeding growth benchmarks.
What is the Reflex Green Light?
Adaptive and individualized, Reflex is a gamified math fact fluency solution that helps students (grades 2+) learn facts from initial acquisition through automaticity. Reflex uses the Green Light as a key motivator for students. Once a student answers a certain number of facts correctly on a given day, a Green Light illuminates in the upper right corner of their screen, marking the completion of a successful day of math fact fluency practice. This milestone is a daily event that is not tied to a single session, and after achieving the Green Light, students can spend tokens and unlock additional Reflex games.
What is the impact of the Green Light?
But what’s so special about getting the Green Light? ExploreLearning researchers sought to answer this question by analyzing the impact of high-fidelity Reflex usage (i.e., achieving the Green Light) on students’ overall math growth in fluency and achievement on grade-level math assessments.
The research analyzed 518 second-grade students in Moline-Coal Valley School District, Illinois, over the 2022-2023 school year. Students completed baseline assessments in the fall and follow-up spring tests using NWEA MAP Growth, a dynamic assessment that measures achievement and growth over time. Researchers compared Reflex fluency and NWEA MAP RIT score growth for two student groups: high-fidelity and low-fidelity Reflex usage.
Reflex fidelity usage increases grade 2 math achievement
At the beginning of the school year, both groups had similar levels of addition and subtraction fluency in Reflex (23% and 28%). By the end of the school year, students who used Reflex with fidelity improved to an average of 94% fluency, while students in the low fidelity group reached an average of only 69% fluency. Additionally,
63% of students in the high-fidelity Reflex group reached 100% fluency, compared to only 9% of students in the low-fidelity group.
Additional findings:
- Students who used Reflex with fidelity were 7.4x more likely to reach 100% fluency than students in the low-fidelity Reflex usage group.
- Greater Reflex growth was predictive of higher spring math RIT scores, regardless of a student’s fall fluency or fall math RIT scores.
- Students who used Reflex with fidelity were 25%-70% more likely to meet or exceed NWEA growth goals compared to similar students with low-fidelity Reflex usage.
In a short amount of time, students who used Reflex demonstrated significant math learning gains and academic success…all while having fun and staying motivated to achieve their daily Green Light goal.
