Bulletin Board Celebrates Student Fact Fluency and Class Milestones
A 5th Grade Special Education Teacher in Rochester, NY sent us photos of the bulletin board that she uses to celebrate individual student success with Reflex and to keep track of the class fluency milestones.
“My students look forward to the days in math when they can log onto Reflex. They even ask to get on during Fun Friday! They are fluent in many more facts than when they started. Milestones, fluency gains, classroom milestones .. all are great motivators, and nice when speaking to parents to show them their child’s progress.”
There are 3 parts to her class bulletin board. The first is a big chart (in the middle) where she tracks her students’ fluency gains and the number of facts learned (25, 50, 75, etc.) and total facts solved (500, 1,000, etc.).
Around the chart, she has posted a character card for each student. She got the cards from the Reflex Engagement Kit available in the Educator Resource Hub, and each student got to color in their own character. She then cut out each character, labeled it with the student’s name and laminated the cards. “very time they get to a percentage fluent (60%, 70%, 80%, etc.) I have starbursts with that percentage on it that I tape to their character. I have starbursts for 60, 70, 80, 90, & 100 percent fluency for 0-10 addition/subtraction, 0-10 multiplication/division, and 0-12 multiplication/division. Ideally, they will become fluent in all the assignments, and they can get 15 starbursts in all. I will send their characters home with them at the end of the school year.”
Also at the center is a laminated class fluency poster. “Every time the class hits a new milestone, I write it on this poster with a dry erase marker.”
In order to keep up with all of the milestones, she checks the Reflex reports every week and prints out the certificates to send home with the kids.
