ExploreLearning Reflex is an adaptive and game-based math fact fluency solution used by millions of students around the world for over 13 years. Efficacy research shows that Reflex is a powerful tool for supporting math fact automaticity and the achievement of grade-level proficiency in math, but feedback from classroom teachers paints an even clearer picture of just how impactful Reflex is on student engagement, persistence, and self-efficacy.

About the research

55 elementary school teachers completed a survey about their experiences with Reflex after using the program during the 2023-2024 school year. Teachers responded to various questions to help the ExploreLearning research team better understand Reflex's impact on student growth.

Teachers answered questions about:

  • Goals and reasons for using Reflex in the classroom
  • Areas of student improvement with Reflex
  • Reflex features and their impact on student learning

What were the main reasons teachers used Reflex in the classroom? Survey responses revealed prominent themes regarding why educators chose Reflex for developing students' math fact fluency.

Teachers chose Reflex to:

  • Improve students’ math fact fluency and automaticity
  • Maintain student interest and motivation
  • Make math fun and engaging for students
  • Track student progress and see tangible fluency results with data

Key findings

After using Reflex, nearly all teachers observed moderate to large gains in math fact fluency. Teachers also shared specific areas where they noticed student growth after implementing Reflex.

They found that Reflex not only helped increase students’ math fact fluency skills but also their overall engagement, persistence, confidence, and attention in math. And 95% of teachers agreed that the outcomes supported by Reflex aligned with student learning outcomes in their state standards and curriculum.

What Reflex features support positive student outcomes?

Teachers reported which elements of Reflex were the most helpful in supporting student learning. The top reasons included:

  • Effective approach to learning math facts: Built on a fact family approach, Reflex delivers individualized math fact practice to each student at their appropriate level. Teachers found Reflex’s personalized practice allowed students to develop fact mastery without moving on prematurely.
  • Game-based learning: Teachers appreciated Reflex's gamified approach. They found that Reflex games and the Green Light kept students motivated and made learning fun.
  • Progress tracking and student feedback: Teachers found the built-in progress monitoring data helped them easily track student progress. Individual and classroom Reflex reports helped teachers see fluency levels and celebrate milestones.
