Multiple studies underscore why math fact fluency matters. Fact retrieval speed is a significant predictor of performance on standardized tests. Additionally, fact fluency predicts performance on math concept problems, word problems, data interpretation problems, and mathematical reasoning items.
Reflex combines research-proven methods and innovative online technology to provide the most effective math fact fluency solution available. “Research is how we create products that are uniquely adapted to today’s classroom context, cost-effective, and maximally effective at improving learning for all students,” said ExploreLearning Senior Researcher Megan Conrad, Ph.D.
As the most effective system for mastering basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division for grades 2+, Reflex helps students quickly gain math fact fluency and confidence regardless of current levels. And math fact fluency is foundational to learning math and is a significant predictor of student math performance.
Because research is fundamental for the development and implementation of Reflex, we’ve added a brand new resource center where you can find all of the Reflex research in one place.
The evidence behind Reflex and its impact on math fact fluency success
Reflex’s game-based approach uses fact families and meets each student where they are, delivering powerful results. Across multiple grade levels, standardized tests, and benchmark assessments—students who use Reflex score higher and grow faster than their peers, as demonstrated by numerous independent, academic efficacy studies.
“Efficacy research can help teachers and administrators make informed decisions about product adoption, instilling confidence in which solutions are effective and efficient for your students’ needs,” said Dr. Conrad. “Our research team regularly conducts efficacy studies, gathering data on the impact of our products through collaborative relationships with district leaders, so that we can show you we are committed to fulfilling our mission and delivering on our promises.”
How about an example of Reflex research? Once a Reflex student answers a certain number of facts correctly, a Green Light illuminates in the upper right corner of their screen, marking the completion of a successful day of fact fluency practice. Students who used Reflex with fidelity (achieving the Green Light in most usage sessions) were 7.4x more likely to reach 100% fluency than students who did not use Reflex with high fidelity. These students also showed significantly higher growth on NWEA MAP Growth assessments and were more likely to meet or exceed growth benchmarks.
