Nothing beats summertime! Slower days, time with loved ones, and new adventures await. But while sunshine and school-free days are unlocked with that final dismissal bell, teachers are ever-familiar with the realities of what awaits on the other side: students will return to school in the fall having forgotten critical skills from the grade before.
What is the summer slide?
The “summer slide” refers to the learning loss that many students experience during the summer break when they don’t regularly practice skills, particularly in math and reading. Without consistent practice, students forget what they learned during the school year, hindering their performance when they begin the next grade level.
How much knowledge do students lose over the summer?
While vacation always seems to go by too quickly, summer learning loss can have lasting effects. By fifth grade, students affected by summer learning regression can lag behind their peers by up to three years.
A study found that achievement test scores declined over summer vacation, equating to roughly one month of school-year learning. The effects of summer learning loss are the most detrimental to math computation. James Kim, Ed.D., a Harvard professor, shared that younger students are the most at risk due to their prime developmental years. “Things like decoding, letter knowledge, and word reading skills are very susceptible to decay without frequent practice, as are math facts like addition and subtraction,” said Kim.
Preventing summer learning loss in math with Reflex
Math fact fluency is a particularly vulnerable area. Unlike reading, which students might continue over the summer through reading or trips to the library, math tends to disappear from day-to-day activities unless students intentionally practice. But teachers and parents can lay the foundation today to make summer math practice something students actually enjoy!
ExploreLearning Reflex is an adaptive and game-based math fact fluency program. For over 13 years, Reflex has helped millions of students develop math fact fluency with research-based instruction, allowing students to free up working memory space and close learning gaps.
Built on a fact family approach, Reflex delivers individualized fact practice at each student’s appropriate level. With tons of fun games and fluency competitions, math fact practice becomes an engaging and rewarding experience for all students.
From day one of the school year, teachers can use Reflex to increase student confidence and math fact fluency. And when it comes time for summer, students can keep the fact fluency momentum going with at-home practice to ensure they get the most effective summer solutions for math.
“My students have done incredibly well with Reflex. I had a student who worked on Reflex all summer and now has such a solid command of multiplication facts from 0 to 6. It's pretty incredible. Thank you!”

Strategies to encourage summer learning with Reflex
Math in the summer doesn’t have to be a chore. Addition, subtraction, and multiplication practice with Reflex prevents and closes summer learning gaps while allowing students to continue the game-based math practice they enjoyed all school year. From serving aliens ice cream to piloting hot air balloons, students develop fluency while staying engaged with fast-paced questions that don’t feel like “summer homework.”
Summer Reflex practice for ten to fifteen minutes daily keeps kids in the habit of learning, which boosts math fact fluency, eases the transition back into the school routine, and reduces resistance to academic work when the new school year starts. Here are some ways to encourage Reflex practice before and during summer.
1. Partner with parents and encourage them to use parent accounts
Before the summer vacation, communicate with parents and remind them about their student’s Reflex account. Emphasize the benefits of consistent fact fluency practice to stay sharp with math over the break—parent buy-in is key for successful summer practice.
Ask your administrator to send several Reflex reminders to parents using your school’s email and messaging systems. If you have a school Facebook group, post reminders in there as well.
Share a quick Reflex summer letter (also available in Spanish) that instructs parents on how to create a free parent account to monitor their child’s progress.
2. Encourage students to get the Green Light
Research found that students who used Reflex with high fidelity, earning the Green Light in the majority of sessions, were significantly more likely to reach 100% fluency levels compared to students who did not use Reflex with high fidelity. Regardless of fall baseline measurements and across all achievement levels, students who used Reflex with high fidelity outscored their peers.
Keep Reflex practice consistent during the final weeks of school! Host end-of-year Green Light challenges and compete with Reflex Competitions to boost grade-wide participation. Remind students to use Reflex over the summer during these engaging classroom events.
3. Ensure students can access Reflex over the summer
Students can access Reflex over the summer with the same log-in they used during the school year. Check with your school principal if you have any concerns about your subscription.
Confirm the following Reflex data for successful summer access:
- Teachers should not remove students from Reflex classes or delete Reflex classes at the end of the school year.
- Site administrators should wait to update student master list(s) until students return to school.
4. Host an end-of-year Reflex party
Set the tone for the summer with a Reflex celebration! Host a classroom or grade-level party to celebrate Reflex milestones and fact fluency achievements from the year. Add a fun summer-themed Reflex bulletin board to make student success visible. Reward students with a fun summer treat (Did someone say popsicles on the playground?) to end the year on a high note and remind students how fun summer practice with Reflex can be.
“I have tried other methods in the past to help with fluency, but this is the only program that I've used that has kept the students motivated over the long term. It is the most effective one I've seen. We use a three-year trend to assess growth. Compared to past scores, currently, our students have gained an average of 20 points in their math skills. As they continue to higher math, the use of Reflex could minimize or negate the summer learning loss that students experience.”

Start building math fact fluency with Reflex
When students maintain math fact fluency, they return to school feeling more confident and excited about math. Math confidence can make a big difference, especially in the first few weeks of the new school year when teachers often review prior material.
