Impact Findings: Reflex Supports Fluency and...

New research involving 35,000+ students found that schools that frequently used ExploreLearning Reflex experienced higher fluency rates and overall grade-level proficiency in elementary mathematics.

About Reflex

Reflex is an individualized math fact fluency program with demonstrated impacts on student achievement. Using math fact families and adaptive technology, Reflex keeps students engaged to develop fluency and automaticity through game-based practice.

Reflex uses the Green Light as a key engagement tool for students. After a student correctly answers a certain number of facts on a given day, a Green Light illuminates the corner of their screen, marking the completion of a successful day of fluency practice. After “getting the Green Light,” a sign of high-fidelity product use, students can unlock additional Reflex games and spend tokens in the Reflex Store.

About the research

The latest research study involved 35,000+ students in grades 3, 4, and 5 at 150+ elementary schools within one of the largest school districts in the United States. 90% of students were non-white, and 30% were classified as economically disadvantaged.

The ExploreLearning research team analyzed student Reflex use from the 2023-2024 school year to categorize schools as having either high or low Reflex use. Students at 63 schools identified as high Reflex usage schools used Reflex, on average, 2 or more days per week, while students at the 88 low Reflex usage schools only used Reflex on average 1-2 times per month. Researchers assessed student fluency growth using in-product usage metrics, with average starting and ending fluency reported per grade and school.

Researchers then examined student math proficiency rates (the percentage of students per grade level who scored in the “Proficient” category or higher) between schools with high and low Reflex use, as well as the impact of Reflex on math standards performance.

Key finding: Reflex use equated to significant fluency gains

Across all high Reflex usage schools, students experienced large fluency gains. Students improved from an average starting fluency of 20.4% (start of grade 3) to an average ending fluency of 84.8% (end of grade 5).

Key finding: Reflex use led to increased grade-level math proficiency

Schools with high Reflex usage showed significantly higher performance on the end-of-year state math test, with a greater number of students meeting or exceeding grade-level proficiency.

Schools with high Reflex use exceeded the state average passing rates, while low-usage schools underperformed. Additionally, students who used Reflex more were even more likely to achieve grade-level proficiency, even when controlling for differences in economic advantages.

Increase math fact fluency and confidence with Reflex

This latest research underscores the positive impact of Reflex on students’ math fact fluency and overall grade-level proficiency in math, but the impact doesn’t stop there.

Teachers who use Reflex to enhance their math curriculum also notice positive increases in student motivation and math confidence.
